AJ Mendez of KLEK Reflects on His Monumental Collaboration with Jaz Coleman: A Meeting of Minds, Vision, and Sonic Revolution

KLEK is on the brink of a seismic shift in the music world. With one more electrifying single set to drop before Christmas and a highly anticipated full-length LP on the horizon, the band is entering a bold new chapter. At the heart of this creative renaissance is a collaboration as unexpected as it is groundbreaking: the meeting of AJ Mendez and the legendary Jaz Coleman. This partnership has not only redefined KLEK’s sound but also set the stage for a musical odyssey unlike any other.

How did you first connect with Jaz Coleman?

AJ: It was late 2019, and through a friend of a friend, our paths crossed. It was completely unexpected, almost as though fate had orchestrated the meeting.

What was the experience like working with him?

AJ: From the moment we met, there was a palpable energy, an aura around Jaz that few in this world possess. It wasn’t just talent—it was something transcendent. We clicked instantly, forming a bond that went far beyond music. It became a profound friendship and mentorship, rooted in mutual respect and an unspoken understanding.

Was the collaboration as productive as you’d hoped?

AJ: It was nothing short of extraordinary. In just three days, we birthed an EP—complete, polished, and ready for mixing and mastering. Beyond that, we held periodic sessions to refine the vision for KLEK, ensuring every step was purposeful. The intensity and efficiency of those days were something to behold.

What did you learn from the experience?

AJ: Working with Jaz was like condensing two decades of wisdom into a single year. It wasn’t just about music—it was about life, philosophy, and the precarious state of the world. One moment, we’d share tea and biscuits while classical music played; the next, we’d be delving into the darker realities of humanity’s trajectory. It was an experience that reshaped my perspective on art and existence.

What are your thoughts on Jaz’s contribution to the recording?

AJ: Jaz brought a visionary brilliance that elevated everything. For the first three songs, he introduced The Big Thrash Master Class approach, which was both intense and innovative. KLEK is unique in that it’s a completely new band, starting with no pre-existing material. Jaz guided us to embrace an entirely fresh perspective. His contributions on keyboards and synths were nothing short of transformative, and alongside Salvador’s expertise in synths, mixing, and mastering, we crafted something truly groundbreaking.

Are there plans to perform live with Jaz?

AJ: It’s a tantalizing prospect. If it happens, it will likely be at his new Club Malvinas. However, Jaz’s role thus far has been more enigmatic—working behind the scenes as a master provocateur, pulling the strings and guiding the vision.

This collaboration between AJ Mendez and Jaz Coleman is not just a meeting of minds but a convergence of two creative forces capable of reshaping musical landscapes. With KLEK poised to release their most ambitious work yet, the partnership stands as a testament to what happens when visionaries unite. As the band prepares for a monumental end to the year, their journey is a reminder that music, at its best, is not just heard—it’s felt. This is not just the evolution of a band—it’s the dawn of a new sonic era.
